Making 2009 Sparkle: The Big Spring Declutter!

I haven’t done much with this feature for a while, but I have been inspired to resurrect it. The above image isn’t mine, but it might as well be. I admit it, I am a terrible hoarder! My attempts at decluttering never work.

The problem is, I admire the minimalist aesthetic – I’d love to inhabit one of those spaces where everything has  a place, looks neat, and there’s lots of wide open space to move, but I also like stuff. These two characteristics do not go well together!

I have therefore decided to make my April – May Making 2009 Sparkle challenge to make a concerted effort to declutter my life. Until the end of May I will:

  • Start an selling pile, a charity shop pile and a recycle pile (the latter will be mostly for clothing too worn out to be re-used, which can be taken to a fabric bank instead.)
  • Get rid of at least one item for each day the challenge runs (41 days!)
  • Re-organise the remainder of my things including paperwork etc. destroying old papers and filing those I need to keep.

At the end of May I will make sure I take everything to it’s intended destination without changing my mind about any of it, for I also have a terrible habit of deciding that I will wear something one day after all, returning it to the back of my wardrobe, and never taking it out again!

Are you a hoarder too? If so, join in and declutter with me! We can share photos of our newly-organised spaces!

  • O dear. This sounds just like me. Good luck to you with your decluttering, mine never goes well.
I end up making piles, which just stay sitting as piles, eventually getting reshuffled into one big mess. Then I start all over again.

I definitely need to make room for myself if I’m going to use our spare room as my office!

  • Yesterday, I de-cluttered my bedroom. It felt so good to see everything so neat and tidy and to finally be able to sit in my little couch again. I’m going to tackle the bathroom and the wardrobe this weekend and see if I can get rid od all the junk in my life.

    Good luck on your challenge!

  • I’m a more of a minimalist, but my live-in partner is the one who loves to hoard things. I’d love to encourage him to get rid of one thing a day for 41 days – what a great idea. Good luck!

  • I have four suitcases of clothing in my garage that I haven’t worn for three years :( and that was AFTER my ‘great purge’… I think I need to join in your decluttering project!

  • [...] – As often happens, when I have lots of work to do, I suddenly get the urge to tidy up! Hence, my decluttering challenge is going quite well at the moment! It feels good to have some space again, I may even re-arrange [...]
