Pure Indulgence – Staying in Hotels Alone

Pure Indulgence is a new series of posts celebrating all things indulgent from the simple, everyday delights to expensive luxuries for the most decadent of occasions. The inspiration for this series came to me on the evening of my first course “study weekend” of this year, when I realised that one of the things I truly love about the course is spending a couple of nights in a hotel by myself, even when it’s a cheap, reasonably basic hotel.

I truly think just staying in a simple, cheap hotel can be as beneficial as a few days in a health spa for my sanity!

* It’s like forced relaxation! I may have a little work left to do, I may have my laptop with me and be happily messing around online taking advantage of the free Wi-Fi, but with comparatively few distractions or obligations compared to home, I always relax more and often get the best night’s sleep I’ve had in weeks when I’m in a hotel on my own!

* Full control of the TV! I can be as selfish with the remote as I want, since there’s nobody elses’ taste but my own to worry about.

* Similarly full control of the heating, etc. I feel the cold quite strongly, so it’s lovely to be able to turn the heat right up without worrying a) that other people are too warm and b) that I’m running up an enormous gas bill!

* I don’t have a en-suite bathroom at home, so it’s something I absolutely love when I’m staying anywhere that does!

* No interruptions! There’s nothing better than sitting down with a good book, a movie, or piece of writing, heck, even a trashy TV show, knowing that you’re definitely not going to be interrupted by someone wanting to talk to you, asking to borrow something, etc. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t resent having company at home, but sometimes it’s really nice to be totally alone for a while.

* Having a proper cooked breakfast without having to make it myself is a luxury indeed!

* It’s really just a wonderful way to get some much-needed “me” time.

Do you have to stay in hotels by yourself for education or work? Have you ever just stayed in one for the fun of it? If you haven’t, I recommend it as a simple and wonderful way to get a break from the pressures of day-to-day life!

  • Oh, bliss! I haven’t stayed in a hotel on my own for AGES, but I definitely agree – it’s so relaxing! You’re free to do whatever you want, and you have a gigantic bed all to yourself for optimal, restful sleep.. yum! :)

  • I normally hate it when I have to sleep away from my husband, but I think you definitely have a point. I bet I’ll feel differently once I have kids.

  • I’ve only stayed in a hotel on my own oncw, but it was such a luxurious expirience! I went on a ‘getting women into engineering’ weekend paid for by a company, and as there were about thirty of us girls on the weekend I thought that they’d double us up in room but no! We got a room each, it was heavenly!
