Snow Days

It’s times like these I really start to wonder what the rest of the world must think of the UK! Despite having nowhere near as much snow as other countries get on a regular basis at this time of year, and despite the total inevitability of the odd snowy winter once in a while, when it happens we always go crazy and treat it like the coming of the apocalypse! Having said that however, I really could do without the ice that’s everywhere! The snow I don’t mind, it’s pretty and snowball fights are great fun, but when it’s compacted down into sheet ice on the pavements it’s not so great.

Still, if everyone else is walking like a penguin too, I don’t feel quite so silly!

Days like these are a great excuse for hot chocolate, wholesome, stodgier than you usually allow yourself meals, evenings in watching movies instead of going out, keeping the curtains closed to help keep the warmth in, wearing a blanket like a cape, stompy boots, scarves worn indoors and putting things off because “it might start to thaw tomorrow”.

If you’re currently in the UK, how are you coping with the snow? People who get it worse than us, how do you manage?

  • Allow me to be just a tad jealous: It’s high summer here in South Africa – temps above 35 degrees celcius, so we’re melting in the heat – and even in winter it doesn’t snow. Not where I live anyway. Maybe a little sprinkling of white in some parts of the country… but not enough to wear cool snow boots and walk like a penguin! Not even enough to make snow angels. Or to make snowmen with carrot noses. My advice? Put on mittens and take pictures! x

  • We don’t get snow here in Mexico and our winters are not THAT cold. However, this time we have a mass of artic air above the country and it’s so cold!! It even snowed in the northern part of the country!! I don’t know how you people with cold climate do it, I want my sunny winter back.

  • ‘I has snow cat’ has snow :D
And I know what you mean. I’m also in the UK and everyone is acting like every day is Christmas. I don’t really like the snow all that much! It’s restricting me and I can’t go anywhere! Boo hiss. Although I do agree that it’s a great excuse to put things off n_n I’ve been exercising the idea rather wildly.

  • I live in North Dakota, which (excluding Alaska) is one of the coldest states in the U.S. & In other parts of the country, people are like that too simply because they aren’t used to it. Here, it’s just so normal that it doesn’t really seem like something that has to be “coped” with because it’s just how it is.. does that makes sense? Blah.

I will say this though: It is totally worth it to invest in a high-quality pair of snow boots, as well as hats, mittens, a coat & long stockings. I used to just go about in my fall clothes & a winter coat but it is so, so so worth it to have nice winter things & not have to run from car to store back to the car again because I’m freezing.

But I really do like to just stay at home & out of the snow for the most part during the winter, & let my brave friends just come over to see me.

  • Actually I’ve read somewhere that ND is sometimes colder than Alaska, because Alaska has heat from the ocean while ND is like smack dab in the middle of the continent. I don’t know if that’s true though, I’ve never been there.

  • It is funny how the world comes to an end when it snows here. I actually love the snow, and down in the south of England have barely had any! But you’re right, the ice is what’s annoying and basically I’ve been dealing with that by not doing a lot! And eating too much! I think it’d be nice if it got a bit warmer again now

  • Cute photo! I’ve recently done a snow-related post with lots of cute snow photos! It is embarrassing how the UK stops running just because of some white rain :)

  • Ha ha, you’re so right. The other day a newswoman referred to our weather as being ‘arctic conditions’ XD I’m actually a bit sad because it seems like where i live didn’t get enough snow for sledging or fun, but just got enough to make walking frightening and driving bad!

  • HAHAHA THAT CAT! Oh my goodness cuuute.

  • I want snow! Just had a horrible humid muggy day.

  • I don’t mind it so much – after all, this is Britain and folk complain when it’s too hot, and they complain when it’s too cold. Although the ice has been awful, and the fact that I don’t have much in the way of winter clothes (HATE sweaters!) has proved one annoyance. I live a ten min walk away from my day job so had no excuse not to turn up :P But I agree with you – snow = nice hot drinks and blankets and TV!

  • I must say, I’m not jealous of those of you with temperatures in the 30s, I think I’m just really hard to please where temperature is concerned! I’d like to live somewhere it’s around 23 degrees C all year round and only rains overnight (aside from the occasional thunderstorm I can watch from the comfort of my living room). That would be bliss!

Sadly, I fear such a place does not exist!

  • natural fibers like wool are still the best for winter clothes~,`

  • when buying winter clothes, i always chose wool because i love the feel of it,:;

  • i like to wear cotton and wool winter clothes, they are the best in my opinion”-:
