Everyone, at some point in their lives, feels inadequate. We’ve all been at the bottom of the work “food chain”, or felt like the ugly duckling in a room full of stunners, but I can say with certainty that I have never met anyone who doesn’t have something amazing to contribute to the world. So, as a follow-up to yesterday’s post, here’s my guide to being happy in your own skin and sparkling as the amazing person you are!

* Whether you have a high-flying career or a part-time job in Macdonalds, your job is no reflection on the person you are, so don’t allow it to define you. It’s an occupation that gives you the means to survive, that’s all.

* Likewise, don’t be defined by your possessions. I’ve fallen guilty of this one, when I’m down or feeling lost, I surround myself with Stuff, and take hollow comfort in the fact that I hoard shiny things. If all of this vanished tomorrow, you’d still be you, so don’t allow your possessions to control your actions.

* Focus on what you love about yourself, as stated in Gem’s post yesterday. If you are more confident in your good points, people will see this, and the things you perhaps want to hid or would rather were not seen as prominent will go unnoticed.

* Take the time to find out your talents. Everyone has them, you may be a great artist or musician, or perhaps you’re brilliant at remembering random facts, or an incredibly fast reader, make it an important part of your life. Start a blog or write a ‘zine about it, make it a regular hobby, even consider a career change, doing something well is exceedingly satisfying.

* Make an effort to do the little things you know you’ll feel good about later. Whether that’s dressing nicely for work as opposed to throwing on the first vaguely smart outfit you find, or taking the time to make something delicious to take for lunch to cheer yourself up in the middle of the day, it’s amazing what a positive effect these things can have on your day!

* Take no notice of the naysayers! If your friends don’t support you, they don’t deserve you. If you come up against constructive criticism, try to take something positive from it, but if people are rude and / or abusive, pay them no heed. Their comments are no reflection on you, they’re in all likelyhood jealous of how great you are.

* Take time for yourself every day, even if it’s just a few minutes, to relax and do something you want to do.

* If you ever find yourself doing something you don’t want to do just because everyone else is, stop and speak up. Chances are someone else will feel the same way and even if they don’t have the courage to join you, your actions will make a difference to them.

* Make an unselfish gesture every day, and treat yourself every day. Small things, such as picking up something someone has dropped, making someone a coffee, giving your spare change to charity, etc. can be so upliting, likewise  with small treats! It’s amazing how much of a boost to your mood a bar of your favourite chocolate, an hour of “guilty pleasure” TV or a small purchase can give you.

* Do what you want, don’t put it off! If you want to start that novel, do it! If you’ve been longing to visit Paris, start saving up and go! See today’s Thought for the Day on Miss Corrine, one that’s definitely worth saving!

Never forget how fabulous you are and don’t be afraid to be a bit different from the crowd, life would be so boring if we were all the same!

How do you stay true to your amazing, sparkling self?
